From its regularly audited growers through to finished product, Orchidwood uses only best materials and best practice at its dedicated state-of-the-art mushroom processing factory in Beckley, East Sussex. With its comprehensive HACCP and quality systems, higher level EFSIS accreditation and full Soil Association certification, Orchidwood justifies its position as the UK’s leading mushroom processor.
Orchidwood Mushrooms was established in April 1993 between Larkin & Thomson and Blue Prince Mushrooms – a wholly owned subsidiary of H J Heinz. Orchidwood is Britain’s only specialist processor of frozen mushrooms to the food manufacturing industry. In April 1996 a new purpose-built factory was constructed in Beckley, East Sussex. Orchidwood is a private company, wholly owned by the executive management team, with a turnover of £4.5 million. The Managing Director is Colin Bell with 35 years in the food industry and 20 of them in mushrooms. He also manages the sales operation. With all competitors based in Europe, Orchidwood offers the unique service of UK-based experts to customers and can provide delivery from stock within 24 hours when required.
Our customer list includes prestigious accounts such as H J Heinz, Baxters, Premier International (H L Foods), Findus, Hazlewood Foods, Northern Foods, Padleys, Kitchen Range. We have around 70 customers. This business was won in the face of stiff competition, based on our superior package of Quality, Prices, Service and Support.
Based in Beckley, East Sussex, Orchidwood employs 25 people at its modern, custom-built facility. It operates 1 shift over 5 days. Currently production weekly output is 60 tonnes. Company strategy dictates ongoing investment in production technology, most recently in grading, packaging and quality control equipment. Operations Director is Peter Thomson. Nathan Goodsell is Technical Director.
